Mac Memos

Bill Andersen’s how-to reminders

OOPS! No more images or movies.

Somehow I managed to delete all of my Macmemos files recently. The text in my posts was retrievable from my database but all of the visuals are toast.

Since the value, if there is any, of many of my entries depended on the illustrations that went with the text, in many cases. I may as well dump those posts. Some of the text may be worth keeping, so I’ll sort through as time permits and do some pruning.

Morale: Back up anything you may wish to keep.

YES!! MacOS X 10.6.3

I have installed the huge update with its hundreds of bug fixes, on two Intel iMacs and everything went smoothly. Both machines have been performing well for a couple of days now.

First I ran Disk Utility to repair all permissions, then I did the installation using Software Update. Just to be sure, I ran Disk Utility again, after 10.6.4 was installed.

So far, none of the applications I use have complained about anything.

Little triangles that hide and reveal

Little triangle icons called “disclosure triangles” (or “twisties” or “twirlies” by some) appear in many Mac menus. If you click on the triangle, the contents of the item will “spill out” to reveal items that are contained within. Conversely, another click will close up the contained items and hide them.

If you suddenly find that your are missing items that you can usually see, you may have accidentally hidden them by clicking a disclosure triangle. Another click will bring your missing items back into view.

If you see this error message when you try to log in to your WordPress installation, don’t worry. It’s probably an easy thing to fix. Chances are, an unwanted “space” character (invisible but present) crept into the last wp-whatever.php document you edited.

Make sure there is nothing at all (not even a space) before the opening <?php  tag and nothing after the closing ?> tag.
