Need Office software without the price tag?

Get Open Office. It’s a free download. I haven’t worked with it much, but my first impression is positive. Looks quite polished. In addition to a word processor, you get presentation software, a database program, a spreadsheet app, a drawing program and some templates.

Although you are invited to donate something, no money is required and you don’t even have to register to use it.

Omni Group releases 4 free apps

Demo’d above is one simple cursor-highlighting effect brought to you courtesy of the now-free Omnidazzle app. Also free are OmniWeb (a browser), OmniDiskSweeper (a file remover) and OmniObjectMeter (a tool for developers). Here’s a link to the press release, containing links to OmniGroup.

Hi-res photos, illustrations and video clips

istock-freeRegistration required, but it’s free. I subscribe to tiStockPhoto’s email notices, to be reminded to take a look. Illustrations and video clips are offered, too. The free offerings are hi-res or web-res; your choice.

The pay collection is extensive and quite reasonably priced and comps are available for layouts. iStockPhoto

Need an older version of an application?

Try here: http://mac.oldapps.com/

On older Macs or OS versions, the latest version of a useful app might not work, but an older version of the app could work perfectly.

TextWrangler: A favourite text editor

textwranglerIt’s a free application from Bare Bones Software that I use all the time.

Download it and see if it serves you as well. Here’s the page.

LiveQuartz for image editing and effects

live-quartz

This is a VERY nice little application that you can download and use for free. With it, you can use layers, control transparency add text, and create good looking images and collages. The author has a very engaging French accent, which you will discover as you learn to use LiveQuartz by watching his short screencasts at http://www.rhapsoft.com/?menu=livequartz_video.

Download it here, and if you like it (and are a PayPal user), consider making a donation. Even a note to say “thank you” would probably be appreciated. A lot of care has obviously gone into the making of this app and the supporting tutorial materials.

Merci beaucoup, Romain Piveteau et ses amis.
